The OBX is roughly 5 hours away from the Washington, DC area.  Here are some important tips for driving ...

 1. As you drive towards Norfolk, you'll take Route 64 East towards the beach. Note that many of the exits require you to drive a few miles before reaching gas, food, etc.  Your best bet is to make a stop on I-95 before getting onto 295.

2. You'll have to take a tunnel to get here.  Most people don't realize this, but you have two choices - the Harbor Tunnel and the Monitor Merrimack. The signs will point you towards the Monitor Merrimack. However, watch for the big signs that give you traffic informtation. They will tell you if there is a delay, and how long the delay is for both tunnels. Taking the Harbor Tunnel is a few minutes faster - if there is no delay. However, if you're hitting the area anytime after 3pm, there is likely to be a delay.

3. Avoiding the Toll Road (Cheseapeake Expressway) ...

 4. Don't cut through Southern Shores on the way to Duck and Corolla. You will probaby get an expensive ticket ...
