biking in the OBX

The best way to see the Outer Banks is by riding your bike -- and there are some great bike trails to discover.  First, you should drop by Kitty Hawk Cycle Company on Eckner Dr , and check with the owner, Michael.  He will point you in the right direction.  He also has the Dare County Bike Trail Maps which are free.  I'm not a big fan of cycling in traffic, so the trail map has been a great resource.  In fact, You can ride from The Hampton Inn in Corolla all the way to South Nags Head, MP 22 at the end of Old Oregon Inlet road without cycling on the high traffic roads.  Here's how you do it ...

From Hampton Inn - Corolla, ride the marked trail through Duck into Southern Shores and follow it all the way like you are heading back to Wright Brothers Memorial Bridge.  At Kitty Hawk Elemetary where S Dogwood intersects,  cross over the main road (158) at the light on to Woods drive - (opposite of S Dogwood).  Follow the trail on the right side of Woods Drive all the way to Kitty Hawk road.  Bear left on Kitty Hawk road and you have to ride on the shoulder for approximately one mile.  Then, you will see the trail marker  on the right and you can pick up the bike trail again.  Follow the trail and markers on to Bay drive which runs parallel to the Kitty Hawk Bay.  The trail meanders throough the back neighborhoods and you end up near the Wright Brothers Memorial.  ( YOu definately need the trail map as it iwill keep you on course as you ride through these neighborhoods.  When you get to Collington Roiad, you will make a left on the bike trail and ride east toward the by pass.  Cross the by pass and head over to the Best Western, then head right and you can either ride on the shoulder of the beach road or cut in through the neighborhoods betewwn the beach road & the by pass & pick up memorial drive.  Once you get to the Nags Head Fishing pier, you can pick up the bike trail off the beach road & ride all the way down to the end of Old Oregon inlet road.  It's a great ride & there are lots of great restuarants & watering holes along the way.
